Oral & inj: Infection of the resp tract, GUT, skin & other infection caused by sensitive microorganisms. Inj: Septicemia, GUT infections, gonorrhoeae.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Caplet/Dry syr Adult & childn >20 kg 250-500 mg/day, <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg/day. To be taken 8 hrly in divided doses. InjUpper resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections Adult250 mg, childn <20 kg20 mg/kg/day in divided doses.Severe infections Adult Increase dose to 500 mg, childn Increase dose to 40 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Lower resp tract infections Adult500 mg, childn <20 kg 40 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Doses are to be taken 6-8 hrly. Bacterial septicemiaAdult 1 g 6-8 hrly by slow IV inj w/in 30 min-1 hr, childn <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg 6 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Caplet/Dry syr: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins); infectious mononucleosis.
Special Precautions
Lymphatic leukemia. May cause severe colitis. Perform kidney, liver function & blood test during prolonged therapy. Patients w/ kidney failure. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, blood disorders, superinfection. For inj, phlebitis, pain at inj site.
Probenecid prolongs plasma t½ of amoxicillin. Allopurinol increases incidence of skin rashes. Reduces effectiveness of OC. For inj, do not mix w/ blood product or protein soln eg hydrolysate protein or IV lipid emulsions.
